I haven't been studying as long as you, but I did start around the same age. So, what do you want to address about them?Įxcuse me, but what are you getting at? Are you asking for an explanation of grade levels and why people use them, or are you starting a rant? I personally find it an interesting topic, thought I don't know much about it, comparing pieces and placing them according to technical/musical difficulites and judging them such. I've also sung The Water Mill and The Vagabond by Vaughan Williams (level 6) for the same festival. I played level 6 the past three years, Rustles of Spring, Rondo Capriccioso, and Reflets Dans L'Eau, so you can see that it's a very inadequate system.

There are 6 levels, and students (it's not for adults, unfortunately) choose one piece from the repertoire of that level and perform it along with scales and sight-reading. Where I come from, there is the NYSSMA Evaluation Festival where instrumentalists in areas of New York gather to have their skill level assessed by trained judges. Excuse me, but what are you getting at? Are you asking for an explanation of grade levels and why people use them, or are you starting a rant? I personally find it an interesting topic, thought I don't know much about it, comparing pieces and placing them according to technical/musical difficulites and judging them such.
